Surely the most irritating question of all and i dont want to appear thick but... i didnt fully follow the info in the visa section. It says it is possible to get a visa on arrival at the airport but then gives info about how to acquire a visa before arriving. I would prefer to get a visa on arrival at Maputo airport if poss, so if i arrive with 2 photos etc this is possible is it? Thank you for your help.

POSTED ON 20 JULY 2010:

I heard the rumours but unfortunately I can confirm that, at borders and airports, $85 is the new price for a 30 day single entry tourist visa (Visto fronteira), the only type of visa issued on arrival (other types from consulates). This came into effect, unannounced on July 06. The previous price at borders and airports was US$25.

Senhor Makwakwa of the Consular section of the Mozambican Embassy in Pretoria 012 401 0300 confirmed this and apologised for any inconvenience to visitors to Mozambique.

This follows on the drastic increase (in 2006) of visa prices when issued at Moz consulates in South Africa and around the World. The rationale then was that, whatever your country charges a Mozambican for a visa, Mozambique would charge a reciprocal rate.

For some passport holders (UK for example), the charge for a visa at a Moz consulate in South Africa since 2006 has been R750 (or about $100), so for many travellers $85 may still be cheaper.

Wish I knew who advises governments regarding such decisions. All the research shows that a far bigger percentage of what so-called 'budget' travellers spend actually stays in the country, and more jobs are created than by the high-end jet-setters who won't notice the increase.

Mike

Yes you certainly can get a visa on arrival for US$25 (no photos needed, just the passport with 2 unused pages and 6 months validity from the day you will leave Moz) at all the 'Airports of entry' i.e Maputo, Inhambane, Vilankulo, Beira, Tete, Songo and Pemba. Also at all land borders except for Mecumbura (from NE Zim) and Namoto (from southern Tanzania).

Sometimes a good idea to get the visa in advance as there could be a 30 min delay while waiting for it to be issued at airports - up to 3 hours at Lebombo/Ressano Garcia during busy times.

Thanks for your swift response Mike. I have left all my travel plans right to the last minute as usual and this knowledge saves me a round trip to the embassy in Lisbon. Cheers.

Hi there,

I'm interested in the point about a visa costing $25 dollars on arrival.

Is that correct? The Moz embassy in London say it costs £40 from them - much more than $25?

Costs R750 (US110) if you get it from the consulates in South Africa.

Hi Gang - new to site - very interesting this business about VISAs
I am going into Moz in September through Pafuri & I have been told so many conflicting stories about if visas for UK passports are available or not at this crossing. It would appear from what Bruce said that it is possible. HOWEVER - I will be with a group of SA travellers who do not require a VISA - so my question is this how long might I hold up the group for - in other words can you say that this is a speedy thing like going into Zim - amazingly enough (!) or is it going to be a mission.
What more can the experts tell us please. Thanks Paul & Lin

Visa issue is usually 5-10 mins, but at very busy borders like Lebombo (Komatipoort) / Ressano Garcia during hectic periods like the beginning of SA school hols the delay could be hours.

At Pafuri it will be a breeze.

Yes, it's now such an advantage to travel in Africa on an SA passport. I'm old enough to have travelled on the old 'Green Mamba' (the officials used to jump when they saw it) when we needed a visa to go further north than Empire Road in Joburg.

Crossed the Rovuma into Tanz in '92 when we were still the world's polecat and the immigration chappie ummed and ahed when he saw my passport, called over his senior and they poured over a big official looking book and then told me there was a problem. Yes, I know there was a problem as then SA's were not welcome in Tanz, visa or no but they apologetically informed that they could not find out the border tax for South Africans and would I mind paying just one dollar?

Paid it but should have put my foot down...!?

Nice story Mike ! in 78 my wife & I flew into Nairobi coming from Israel which made matters worse I think - both of us with UK passports - although she does have an SA one too - when they saw country of Residence SA they gave us hell - allowed us in finally after much debate for 4 days max ! How times change - BTW Lin was in Jordan last year and decided that she would go in on her UK passport given the rapport between Jordan & the UK - huge mistake - had to pay for VISA now if she'd gone in on her SA passport......you've got it ! cheers Paul.

Am I likely to have to queue for a long time at Vilanculos in September? I don't want to keep my fellow passangers waiting for hours.....!

NO. Should take no longer than 20 mins but if push comes to shove the others can go into town and you can simply follow later - just 5kms to town from the airport.

Visas are issued at all of Mozambique's land borders except for Kilambo/Namoto from Tanzania and Mukumbura/Mecumbura if coming from Zimbabwe for around US$25.

So yes at Kosi Bay/ Ponta do Ouro visas are issued on arrival - pay R172 or US$25.
