We will be travelling to Pemba during December 2010.

Any route advice will be appreciated - the idea is to get to Pemba as quick as possible (from Gauteng), spend 2 weeks there and then use 5 - 6 days for the return trip (maybe through Vilancoulos etc)

Also, would it be possible to do a day trip to Ibo Island from Pemba?

Thanx

Hi Bell,

Have a look at this thread http://www.mozguide.com/fala/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=3294 where Mike has been answering some of my questions on this route. The most direct route to Pemba is the one we are doing, ie via Zim, Malawi, Mandimba, Montepuez, but this is not necessarily the quickest. I think the quickest would be straight up from Komatipoort, crossing the Zambezi at Sena and then via Nampula to Pemba.

Re a day trip to Ibo: My understanding is that you need to leave your vehicle at Tandanhangue (secure parking) and negotiate a dhow trip or motor boat. Dhow is anything between one and five hourse, motor boat about 45 min to an hour. But they only leave at high tide, so a day trip may not be feasible.

A guest house called Cinco Portas Pensao has a supply boat that does the Pemba - Ibo run on a weekly basis, taking about 12 hours, with snorkelling along the way. www.cincoportas.com

Sorry, that should have read crossing the Zambezi at Caia. The Cuamba - Nampula route is probably faster than Mandimba - Montepuez, although my notes on my map from a conversation with someone working in the area says "shocking road" for the Cuamba to Nampula section. That said, the Marrupa to Montepuez section is a bush track that is impassable in the wet, so that is probably not feasible in December.

Marrupa to Montepuez is usually blocked by the flooding Balama river during the rainy season.

Thanks Tony
