Got this from the www.overland.co.za google group:
Hi All

The Giriyondo Border post is complety closed - due to heavy rains and floods in the Limpopo Transfrontier Park (closed as of 29 Jan 2010) - we travel the road to Massingir / Xai Xai on a weekly basis.

Crocodile Bridge at Komati Pooort also closed due to floods.

Only Komati border post is accessible.

Enjoy the trip

Johan Nepgen

I will monitor this to find if and when the Giriyondo border reopens.

Mike

It was reopened but if any heavy rains occur in the area, could be again temporarily closed.

Note that citizens of Moz neighbouring countries do not need a visa. Also all other passports can get a visa on arrival for USD25 (ZAR172) at all airports (international) and almost all borders. Visas are not issued (due to lack of electricity for computers) at the following borders:
NOT ISSUED AT:
Mekumbura / Mucumbura
Luangwa (Feira) / Zumbo
Kilambo / Namoto
Nayuchi / Entre Lagos.

Is Giriyondo open at the moment? We intend traveling through there on 28 March. Does anyone have a telephone number for Giriyondo?

Hi All

Is the road from Giriyondo to Xai-Xai accessible with a VW Microbus as part of the convoy (2 4wd and a Microbus)or only for 4wd vehicles. Want to travel to Morongulo end of June 2010 and return the 7th of July. If not what overnight stop will you suggest between Maputo and Massinga. What is the current exchange rate and the cost of diesel and unleaded currently.

Thanks

Hi

with the erosion due to the recent rains, right now I think microbus would have clearance and approach and departure problems - but road should be graded by June so usually yes a Microbus, driven very carefully where needed, would do Giriyondo to Massingir - but not during or after rain (not likely May to October).

Petrol and diesel around MT25 per litre and todays rate is MT4,4 to the Rand and MT32 to the US$.

Hi Mozman,

We are planning to spend a few weeks in Guinjata over December and we would like to travel via the Giriyondo border post. I would appreciate some advice on the following questions, and also any general advice you want to share:

- Does the border post issue temporary import permits? If not is this a problem?
- Can you suggest the best route from Giriyondo to Guinjata?
- Estimated travelling time?
- One of our party is planning on taking his boat (rubber duck). Are these roads passable for a boat trailer?

Your assistance would be greatly appreciated

Hi

Firstly from your alias I assume you're a biker and also assume you know of course that bikes are not allowed either into Kruger or into the Parque Nacional do Limpopo.

TIP's are issued at Giriyondo as are visas for those that need them. Seguros (compulsory 3rd party insurance) is issued at the Massingir gate.

Route is:

Kruger Phalaborwa gate to Letaba Restcamp is 50km.

From Letaba to the Giriyondo border post is 45km.

Giriyondo - Massingir (gravel, loose stone, some erosion) 80km, 2hrs.

Massingir - Chokwe (some stretches of bad potholes) 100km, 2 hrs.

At Chokwe cross the Limpopo on a big new bridge to Guija (Canicado).

Guija - Chibuto: some potholes but mostly good tar. 70km, 1 hr.

After Chibuto look for the turn off left to Manjakaze (Mandlakaze).
Chibuto - Manjakaze: sandy in dry, muddy when wet. 22km, 40 mins - 1 hr.

Manjakaze - Chidenguele (on main road EN.1): sandy in dry, muddy when wet. 50km, 1hr.

Chidenguele - Lindela (turn off from EN.1 to Inhambane): Very bad potholes, road being rebuilt for 50km, then good tar. 155km, 3hrs.

Lindela to Guinjata: Rough repaired potholes tar, then some heavy sand to Guinjata. 50km, 1,5hrs.

So in total you can bet on, border delays and pee and petrol stops EXCLUDED, 10 - 12 hours Giriyondo to Guinjata via the route described above.

Cowboys and other childish fools are welcome to let me know how much faster they have been able to do the above route, but make sure you include details of near-misses or hits on wildlife in the Parks, how many kids you nearly ran over, rims buckled, cops bribed, goats and chickens totalled, and (if you survive) head-on collisions with other idiots.

Mike, I was wondering if you could help me clear up some confusion with the Kosi bay/Farazela border: Can one get a visa (for a UK passport) at this border for travel north in Moz to exit at Giriyondo? I have heard different answers to this!

Thanks very much

Alex

Hi
yes all passport holders (apart from the exempt citizens of countries bordering on Moz) are issued visas at Kosi Bay for R172 (could be R185). So no problem there. In fact visas are only NOT issued at the following borders:

From Zimbabwe: Mecumbura and Rotanda (pedestrians only).
From Malawi: Nayuchi / Entre Lagos, Vila Nova da Fronteira and Metangula.
From Tanzania: Kilambo / Namoto and Negomano (new Unity Bridge over the Rovuma (Ruvuma) river.

All International airports in Moz also issue visas.
