strange thing happened yesterday - was replying to a post and it dissapeared so here is what I replied: NOTE PONTA DO OURO - MAPUTO IS 4X4 COUNTRY! Durban to casa Lisa in one day is too far as there will be border delay, then 3 hours Ponta do Ouro border to Maputo then the hassles and delays of the Catembe - Maputo ferry and chaotic Maputo traffic. So advice is get to Thobeka Lodge www.kosi.co.za fist day then fairly easy drive up to Tofo next day. Or perhaps overnight Ponta do Ouro or Catembe. Note Kosi Bay / Ponta do Ouro border hours are 0800 - 1700. Visa at the border is R172 or US$25 - Mets not accepted.
We drove from Maputo to Vilanculos a couple of years back and although the road was generally very good, there was one stretch of about 30km after Maxixe which was full of enormous potholes. We had a 4x4, so managed ok, but now my brother in law wants to drive up there with a normal car and I am trying to find out if that part of the route has been fixed in the meantime. Can you help?
Still two VERY bad stretches of potholes not OK in normal car - north of Xai-Xai then north of Massinga. These stretches are being resurfaced so perhaps by year end will be OK without high-clearance car.
Durban to Tofo via Ponta do Ouro.
