Heard rumours about this but finally have pics that prove it. The 'pontoon' crosses at the usual Mapai/Xicumbane crossing but will still be seasonal, I think as when the Limpopo is in full spate I think the polers will be literally and figuratively out of their depth. Email me for more details and the photographs if needed. Cost is around R350 per vehicle, haggling skills dependant.

OK
I finally got through to the Pafuri border on 013 735 8936 and was told very definately that the 'Limpopo is very full and non-one is crossing', also that no-one has driven across this year yet. Also it seems that the Limpopo level is actually rising at the moment.
So pretty sure that your options are the barge, the detour through the Limpopo Park to Massingir, or the detour through Kruger or simply to go via Giriyondo - I phoned them at 013 735 8931 and was told the road was OK for 4x4's.

Thank you Mike, I think that Giriyondo/Massingir is the only option after the recent rains |

Yep agree with Thinus
Will be watching the Limpopo level and as soon as there is any news, you all will be amongst the first to know.

Just go this via the overland google group:
"We are at Mapai crossing now the 21st (May)2010 at 13:18 and the river is reported about 1.2m Deep now, heavy rains in moz yesterday."
Note that the depth of 1.2m is only estimated - there will be holes and channels deeper.
So the barge remains the only option when crossing the Limpopo other than the barrage at Macarretane or the bridge at Chokwe. And of course there is Beitbridge SA - Zim too.

Limpopo should be dropping but call the Pafuri border (0800 - 1600) on 013 735 8936 and ask whether anyone has been crossing. Let us all know what you learn.

Thanks Arajeng
let's hope the Limpopo level drops swiftly as there seems to be quite a few overlanders waiting to cross. I would choose the Pafuri crossing point once levels are down - no hassles with locals and their 'toll-bridge', and a nicer route overall.
