We are doing a trip in Aug/Sept, entering Mozambique at Pafuri, Vilankoulos, Inhassoro, Gorongoza, Ilha da Mozambique, Nacala, Pangane, up to the Rovuma River, back to Pemba, west over Montepeuz to Marrupa, Niassa Park, Lichinga, Metangula, into Malawi, some time there and back into Moz, cross Zambesi at Tete, down to Chimoio. From there we would like to go down over Dombe Village, Espungabera to Mavua Village. According to T4A you cannot cross the Save River by vehicle but I have heard of people who did it. Is it possible by end September or will it be a risk? We are a single vehicle, diesel Cruiser p/u on 7.50x16 tyres. If possible we can exit Moz again at Pafuri, alternative is to enter Zim at Espungabera and go back over Mashvingo.
Hopefully we can cross the Limpopo end August on the way up. Any other advice or suggestions on our route will be welcome. |

| You can cross the Rio Save in Massangena in drying-season. The best way: ask the locals, she can show you the best place to crossing. The crossing point change everey year because the rainy-season. The crossing-place was in October 2008 circa 500m in north-west from the t4a-gps-points (in 2008 i pass towards the village in north-west-facing, afterthat a old, small steel-bridge an than coming on the waterfront). I think by the end of September is the Save river-crossing feasible. Your route is a nice trip... :-) |

Hi Pierre What a great trip!
I have crossed the Save at Mavue in July a couple of years ago. by September you will almost certainly be able to cross the Save and also the Limpopo rivers and then enter Kruger at Pafuri - no problem.
See: www.mozguide.com/pdf/anyone%20seen%20a%20tourist.pdf and note the contact for Imofauna at the end of the story.

| Thanks a lot for the feedback. I also got a track from someone who crossed the Save right on the Zim border. It is more remote there so for a single vehicle the Massangena one seem the better choice. |

| Seem to me the crossing of Limpopo is a problem this year. My Cruiser p/u is over 3 ton when loaded so the barge at Mapai is out. We planned to cross close to Pafuri on 21 August and follow the road east of the Limpopo down to Mapai but I want to make provision for an alternative road should it still be a problem to cross at the time. If I enter Moz at Giriyondo and cross the Limpopo at Joao or Chokwe, which will be the better option to Vilankulos - north to Mapai or straight to the EN1 and from there north next to the coast? |

Our trip is now only 3.5 weeks away. At this stage we still hope the Limpopo will be low but if not crossable we will go via Giriyondo.
I still have a few questions. I read Tony Weaver's report and want to know if one can camp at Mocuba. Lodging and rooms are not for us so we try to sleep in the RTT most of the time. On T4A I see they mention safe camping southwest just out of town at a Missionary. Is this an option?
At Ilha we want to camp at Casuarina (Bridge) Camping. Will stay off the beach as I believe it is a toilet there. We may follow Tony's advice and stay at Casa do Gabriel on the island. From there we want to drive on gravel as close to the ocean as possible to the otherside of the bay at Mossuril and from there to Matibane and eventually Nacala. Is this track/road a viable option? Then plan to camp at Libelula so I hope they can take us with the RTT. After that up to Pangane, then Rovuma river where we plan to sleep at a German Missionary ala T4A and down to Pemba at Pemba Dive Camp. Then west as per original post.
Please let me know of any thing I can improve on. As mentioned on other places, we are solo so to change plans while on the trip is very easy. |

Hi
Have heard of the missionaries near Mocuba - but only 3 or 4 years ago so I bush camp after Mocuba - find a track to a village off main road and ask to speak to 'chefe' who will then show you where to camp.
You can drive near coast to Mossuril - Nacala (ask about Ilha Crusse) and Libelula certainly perfect for camping and RTT.
Used to be a Zambian Missionary called Mutita Kashimoto at Quionga but he moved to Quissanga, so perhaps take a drive out to beach nearby to Quionga (nice beaches - been there), and ask the local chefe for a camping site and reliable guarda (watchman).

| Thanks, I think I have almost all the information I need. One last thing, if we go the Giriyondo route over Chibuto and leave Aquia Pesqueira at Massingir early morning, where would be a good place to camp? Last time we left Tsendze in Kruger and went through the border at 08h00 and reached Praia do Sol at Quissico late afternoon. That however was a long drive and if there is a nice site at Chidenguele please let me know. On T4A I see Nhanbavale Lodge and camp on the lake, any experience of them? |
