Hi Mike,
We have hired a 2WD in J'burg and are heading down to St Lucia for a few days, from there we really want to head north into Moz. I was wondering if we could make the border crossing at Ponta do ouro and then drive up to Tofo without a 4WD ? Or do we need to go back out and enter via Swaziland to be safe ?

Thanks
Chris and Charly

Hi
if it is a high ground clearance vehicle like a bakkie (pick-up) and you have had LOTS of sand driving experience and you know about reducing tyre pressure where needed and carry a good compressor to reinflate and you are prepared to push a lot (with help from locals) get stuck now and again and damage the vehicle's bodywork in the process then go via Ponta.

Without 4x4 I would go via Swaziland and enter at Goba. For a great stopover (or longer) in Swazi look up www.mabuda.co.za - a few km's from Siteki.

Thanks Mike, I think the Swaziland option is best. If we want to go to Ponto, can we get across the border and then go back out and around to Swaziland ?

Yes but the 10km from the border to Ponta does have some tricky thick sand and hills that could give you some fun.
