Hi, we are going to a music festival at malongane (early september), need to take ferry accross to catembe and then i get different versions of what the road is like from there.
also saw an article about the road being fixed up? no oral confirmation yet?
if some of our group takes public transport from catembe to malongane: how long will it take? |

Hi Jan
Try to avoid the Catembe ferry - it is very busy and can cause delays of over an hour if you are in a vehicle. If walking then no problem. If going via Lebombo (Komatipoort) / Ressano Garcia border then Boane - Bela Vista - Malongane or enter via Swaziland at Goba then Changalane - Boane - Malongane.
Transport leaves Catembe daily for Ponta do Ouro around 0500 then whenever full - takes around 3-4 hrs (if no breakdowns).
Road has not yet been done.

Thanks, we are going to spend the evening before in Maputo so we will take the ferry the next morning and don't mind the wait. Do the ferry start operating at 5h00, guess we might pitch there about 7:00 a bit hungover? Or does it make sense to drive around matola side and get back onto road to malongane?
Looks like we will all be in cars, 1xsuzuki 4x4 1xsuzuki4x2, jeep wrangler and pajero. Know we might be chancing it with the suzuki4x2 but we take spades and strong rope and 2m :) What do you think?
Thanks for your advice so far!

Yes Ferry should start 0500 Maputo side then every 20-30 mins. Drive around too long and will not save time so use ferry. Is the 2WD Suzuki high clearance? If yes with tyres at 1.2bar, and good driver, should make it. Take a carton of JPS cigarettes as best currency when needing locals to dig and push.
Where are you staying in Mapoot?

We recently starting calling it mapootsh:)
Were going to stay at maputo backpackers in triunfo, but now saw costa do sol hotel rooms just costs a bit more, so we'll go for those.
Have a whole crew of people who haven't been before so look forward to see there faces when they sit with plate of camerao and 2m in front of them.
I lived and worked in Maputo for about a year in 1997/1998, last year also drove up to pemba for a holiday, up through moz, back through zim
In all the years never went south of Maputo though so really looking forward to this. Thanks for your help!
check www.forr.co.za for details on the festival, wish they could include a couple of bands from maputo as well |
