I have heard there is ongoing construction, how bad is it? My husband and i will be driving a sedan but have experience driving on forest service roads here in the states as well as poorly maintained roads in other countries More than once on other message boards the idea of driving has been discouraged with flying instead recommended I know southern Mozambique is pretty popular with South Africans, they can't all be flying
there are maintained diversions around the roadworks and since it is the dry season to November, slow but doable until then. Also depends on how far north you intend to go as after Mocuba for about 50km a high clearance vehicle may be essential.
Note too that no 4x4 severely limits the beaches that are accessible to you, but yes still an option with good planning.
OK, no big worries then. Note that the drive Maputo - Inhambane -Barra beach (Flamingo Bay) will take around 8 hours.
Make sure that you print the relevant section of the PDF downloads (see top of this page) so that if you have any problems you can contact the nearest lodge for assistance as this is usually the best idea.
very important too that you buy an mCel Giro starter pack(SIM card for mobile phone) plus some airtime as International roaming can be patchy in Moz.
Also remember that the road is not your enemy - your speed and other unpredictable drivers, pedestrians and livestock are the real obstacles on Moz and most African roads.
Hi Mike, you are so right.Friend of mine's son drove all the way up to Inhambane with a Camry. We towed him the last 5km (heavy sand)to Barra da Manta. That was now in July.Regards
That must be Manta da Barra www.mantadabarra.co.za/homepage.html - what was it like. I walk across deserts to avoid quad-bikes - would I like Manta da Barra?
Judi, you might also need a tow or push on the last few km's to Flamingo, unless you are accustomed to driving a 2WD in sand. Plenty of assistance at Barra so don't fret.
