Bazaruto Archipelago.

DON’T MISS

·         Bazaruto Archipelago: excellent scuba diving and snorkelling on Two-Mile Reef.

·         Island Dhow excursions: go to ‘Sail-Away’ near Vilanculos hotel Dona Anna.

·         Charter cruises: fabulous trips around the islands.

·         Vilanculos village life: witness a traditional wedding or wander around the bazaars.

·         Big game fishing: record-breaking catches of sailfish.

·         Baobab forests: the southernmost occurrence of these in Mozambique.

Africa’s version of the famed Galápagos Islands, the Bazaruto Archipelago and surrounding marine environment is a complex and unique ecosystem, well protected by its isolation. Harbouring one of the last viable populations of dugong along the entire East African coast, the Bazarutos command some of the most pristine coral reefs in the Indian Ocean. In descending order of size, Bazaruto, Benguerra, Magaruque, Santa Carolina (also known as Paradise Island) and tiny undeveloped Bangué Island each have their own charm and character.

Inhassoro

 Inhassoro .

Inhassoro is a sleepy little fishing village some 94km (58 miles) to the north of Vilanculos and just 15km (9 miles) from the EN1.  It has a service station, but the pumps often run dry.  Inhassoro boasts a camp site with seasonal scuba and ski-boat fishing facilities, two hotels, a handful of beach lodges , a bus terminus, a few restaurants, general stores, a marketplace, a health post offering basic nursing service, a police station and a short grass airstrip a stone’s throw from the bairros, so expect goats and children to be hazards if attempting to land here.

MAINLAND TOWNS

Vilanculos

About halfway between Maputo and Beira, Vilanculos has become an important public transport and air terminus. It lies only 21km (13 miles) off the EN1 and 10km (6 miles) from Magaruque Island, which makes Magaruque that much more accessible from the mainland. An international airport (visas can be issued here on arrival) with a tarmac runway of 1470m (4823ft) serves the town. Taking this as well as the newly surfaced road into account, Vilanculos is fast becoming the mainland’s gateway to the Bazaruto Archipelago. Developers are taking advantage of its location by opening lodges, backpackers’ facilities, restaurants, camp sites, hotels and boat charters. In addition,

Vilanculos is well supplied by a dhow safari operator (Sail-Away), market, bank, public phones and Internet, service stations, quaint supermarkets and a medical clinic. Lounge in a lodge, set up your tent, install yourself in one of the rustic huts, stock up on mandioca and lush papaya (pawpaw) fruit and forget about shopping malls!

Sail-Away (Funazi Dhow)

Just down a bit south of the Dona Anna and one road up from the beach, Dave and crew and their dhows offer fully catered authentic ocean camping safaris, which include day visits to the islands of the archipelago, and overnight camping at a remote mainland location .  Sail with men who have grown up on the sea.  An unpretentious, genuine experience capturing the essence of Mozambique's 'Marinheiros'.
