Dear Mike,

You have a wonderful site, very useful!

In July/August, my family is intending to travel by (rental) 4x4 from Zimbabwe to Vilanculos, and on to SA. My initial plan was to go via Mutare-Chimoio-Vilanculos, but now I am also considering crossing the border from Gonarezhou. How long would one take to travel from Chicualacuala to Vilanculos in mid-winter? Is there any accommodation along the way except camping? Is it safe to do with one vehicle only at that time of year? I am not a very experienced 4x4 driver, though I've done Xai-Xai-Chokwe-Giriyondo-Phalaborwa last year.

Thank you in advance, and advice is most welcome.

André

Greetings and welcome to mozguide

firstly Gonarezhou is a fantastic park so I would stay there at least 2 or 3 days en-route. The Sango / Chicualacuala (Malvernia) border is quite sticky on the Zim side as the police often demand to see police clearance for your vehicle, so I highly recommend that you obtain this before departure.

No accommodation other than bush camping en route to Vilanculos. I would go Mapai - Machaila - Mabote - Mapinhane - Vilanculos. This takes about ten hours so be at the border at 8, and assuming you get through by 9am, you should make it to Vilanculos at a reasonable hour.

Go well

Thanks for that, Mike. We'll probably cross the border the night before and stay in Chcicualacuala, and set off at sunrise. The hotel at the train station is still running, right? I assume a document from the rental agency that we can take the vehicle out of the country is sufficient to convince the border officials?

Thanks again!

Hi
Up until a few months ago I would have recommended a stay at Hotel Estação in Chicualacuala. In December the man who managed it returned (permanently) to South Africa). So I not sure whether it is still functioning properly. I will contact him, but perhaps he will also not know.

Regarding rental vehicles, Sango side will still ask to see police clearance. This is not a legal requirement, but is used as pretext to extort money. Sango (Moz side of Chicualacuala) is notorious for this - do the Google search.

Will let you know about the hotel.

Hi again

Forgot to thank you for the compliment. Thanks!

Just got a message from Derick who used to manage Hotel Estação and he says all good there so your plan should work. I would still be prepared for anything should you not find the hotel fits your needs.
